MQ-9 Reaper at RIMPAC 2022

RIMPAC, a mammoth international maritime exercise, was held during the week ending 4 August 2022. During this exercise, an experience occurred which demonstrates the great benefit of powerful TacSit software. An Air Force Reaper drone crew involved in the RIMPAC exercise were flying a MQ-9 Reaper drone in the Pacific Ocean on a scheduled training mission from their control station in New Mexico. The crew received a distress call from a burning ship and flew the drone nearer to investigate. Sensors on the Reaper were able to capture video footage from the wreckage near Hawaii and relay it back to the base in New Mexico. A team of rescuers were called as a result. The transfer of video footage from the drone to various parties became instrumental in the ensuing rescue of Peruvian sailors from the burning ship.

“The MQ-9 aircrew sitting in New Mexico and intelligence personnel in Hawaii were privy to the same video feeds, in real-time, giving everyone involved the same information and putting them on the same page,” Owensby said. “That type of actionable intelligence can provide decision-makers with what they need to instantly give orders that can save lives.” (https://taskandpurpose.com/news/air-force-mq-9-reaper-rescue-mission/)
